She was born Nov. 29, 1921 to Wyatte Bert and Jennie Arthur Copeland in Ashland, Ky. She lived in Charlottesville, Va., and had two brothers, Wyatte James Copeland and Russell Bert Copeland, both deceased.

She was born Aug. 7, 1935 in Bath County, a daughter of the late Walter Golden Layton and Ruby Marshall Layton. She was a certified nursing assistant for the former Taylor Nursing Home.
