Keep the fight fair and clean

Editor, The Recorder,
We vehemently disagree with the concept of wind turbines in Highland County for all the reasons we have heard so vociferously pronounced over the past few years. We have yet to hear one good reason based on fact and absolute guarantees giving at least a reasonable venue for strenuous debate why we should even consider the inclusion of these monstrous mechanical goliaths into our community not one.

There is no reason at this point to elaborate further our feelings or the feelings of the community which are self evident. However, we do feel that it is the appropriate time to back up, take stock of what this community is all about and regroup.

This is not the time (and never will be) for mud-slinging, meanness, innuendo whatever to come into play. We get a belly full of that kind of nonsense everyday in every newspaper, TV, or radio broadcast, and what do we get as a result? Second rate solutions to critical questions.

Let us say, simply that Mac and Lola McBride have every right to petition the county to allow for wind turbines to be erected on their property and the supervisors have every right and even the duty to approve of them if that is what they think is best for us which they did. However, the skirmish is not over because we, the citizens of this community, can carry on the fight to defeat the turbine resolution in a lawful, civil, decent way that has characterized our image of the people of Highland since we arrived here over 17 years ago.

Now, to the real point of this letter: to reassert, we vehemently disagree with the supervisors and in particular, Jerry Rexrodes decision to allow wind turbines in Highland County but we also wholeheartedly believe that Jerry made his decision after much research and hard thought. Never will we believe that Jerrys vote was cast frivolously nor that it was cast for his personal gain, both of which are now being alleged.

There is probably not one person in Highland County who has not benefitted, at one time or another, from Jerrys many selfless favors and acts of kindness which he has routinely performed out of nothing more than his sincere love for this county and the people who live in it. Whether we agree with Jerry or not, having known him for practically the entire time we have resided in Highland County, we believe in Jerry, and we do not waiver in this respect, as an intelligent, hard-working, thinking, morally intact, completely honest man who we consider to be our close friend. It is extremely painful and difficult for us to watch his personal character being assailed with uncharitable and unfair remarks.

We are all going to take the actions necessary to continue this fight. But hopefully we will all be big enough to do it with integrity, to keep it fair and clean, and to respect our opponents point of view.
