Luck Stone donates $25,000 to Highland swimming pool fund By Geoff Cox • Staff Writer
MONTEREY -The fund-raising for Highland County's pool project surged forward toward its goal of beginning to build a community pool by this spring thanks to a $25,000 donation from the Luck Stone Foundation.
The Richmond-based company employs several Highland County residents at its Augusta County quarry, and owner Charles Luck III said that was part of his motive for the contribution.

"Luck Stone is proud to have Dean, Dave, and Mike Simmons as employees. We are pleased to support the local citizenry for the betterment of Highland County," Luck said. "We are certain the pool and recreation center will be enjoyed by all."
Highland's recreation commission member and leader of the fund-raising drive, Maggie Cavell, was delighted at the news. "We started raising money last September and we are at $215,531 with Mr. Luck's generous donation," she said.
The $25,000 will be disbursed in two amounts of $12,500 over the course of this year and next.
Cavell was instrumental in soliciting the donation and was praised by Luck as "wonderful to work with. She's an outstanding asset for the project," he said.
The recreation commission will be able to put site contracts out for bid when it reaches $220,000, and hopes to break ground this spring.
About $4,500 is left to raise before the matching Virginia Outdoors Foundation grant can be used.
