Girls' soccer scores 1st win

By Geoff Cox • Staff Writer

ROANOKE -"It really feels good, everyone's really excited," said Bath coach Ed Walters after the lady Chargers defeated Faith Christian 2-1 Tuesday to finally break into the win column after three win-less years.

The Chargers were finally on the right side of a mismatch. Faith Christian fielded one team consisting of JV and varsity players so the Chargers did the same, much to their benefit.

Eighth grader Angela Herscher scored both Bath goals, one midway through the first half off an assist from Justine Pasco to give Bath a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Faith Christian scored at the beginning of the second half to tie the game at 1-1. A swarming Bath defense kept the ball away from their goal for the rest of the game as the Charger offense probed the Faith defense for an opening to score.

Herscher, playing center forward, was aware in front of the opposing net and punched in her second goal of the off an assist from fellow eighth-grader Carrington Pasco. "Our eighth-graders were impressive and the whole team played really well. Jessica Philpot didn't have to work so hard in goal but still had a great game," said Walters. "The girls that have played all four years, especially the seniors were overwhelmed by the win. I told them this might give us the boost we need heading into districts. I think this will get their confidence up." The Chargers are 1-5 and played Riverheads Thursday. District play starts Tuesday the 17 at home against Parry McCluer.
