Highland man gets second chance at life
      MONTEREY — He was dead. Doctors said they could find no brain activity. His family was called in to say goodbye. He wasn’t ready for this. He had things to do. The call was from the developer working to locate a Dollar General store on a lot Brunner owns in Healing Springs telling Brunner that due to a culvert under the lot, Dollar General would not put a store there.

New music center director welcomed
      WARM SPRINGS — Out of about 100 applications, Richard “Dick” Riley has been chosen to lead Garth Newel Music Center and its signature chamber music programs. The center’s board named Riley executive director in an announcement this week. Riley will assume the post Sept. 13.

Could lodging tax boost tourism?
      MONTEREY — A lodging tax could be a good thing for tourism, according to Highland’s Economic Development Authority tourism subcommittee. This week, a survey will be mailed to all known lodging facilities in the county to find out how much money tourists spent on lodging the last six years. Individual data will not be made public, but a summary of the findings will be.

Correction
      In the July 15 edition of The Recorder in the article ìBCHS softball field, drainage project a go,î it was reported that a new drainage pipe associated with the softball field project would carry water to a ditch along U.S. 220. In fact, water from the pipe will enter an existing ditch about 100 feet from U.S. 220 and will eventually reach the U.S. 220 right of way about 950 feet downstream.

Weezie, chair of the Wormtown Council, is so overcome with the cacophony of the crowd, she faints. A well-meaning, but misguided, EMT waves smelling salts under what might be Weezie’s nose. Alas, this is her fatal undoing.

Historian shares log cabin expertise
      MONTEREY — On July 8, Virginia Department of Historic Resources Architectural Historian Mike Pulice spoke at a meeting of the Highlands Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia at the Highland County Public Library. The topic of Pulice’s illustrated presentation was log cabins, which featured a number of log structures from southwest Virginia.
