Bolar Ruritan Club lists service report, Nov. 6, 1958

BOLAR - The Bolar Ruritan Club, organized in September 1954 by the Stonewall Ruritan Club, is one of 26 like organizations in the Woodrow Wilson District which comprises Highland, Augusta and Nelson counties and will have delegates at the district convention at Stuarts Draft on Friday, Nov. 7.

In preparation for the district meet, the Bolar Club has prepared the following service report of activities during the year:

¦ Gave Christmas baskets to sick and shut-ins; cut wood for a family; gave floral sprays for deceased members and friends in the community; sent cards and visited sick; gave donations to Red Cross chapters in Highland and Bath.

¦ Held annual community picnic in August; sponsored a quartet of gospel singers; held two oyster suppers; sponsored three square dances, three shooting matches and a game party at the Ruritan Hall.

¦ Entertained several persons at the May dinner meeting; gave candy and oranges to children at Christmas program; sponsored a contestant at Miss Highland contest and one in Miss Bath contest; purchased warm-up suits for Monterey basketball team; loaned turtle derby equipment to Highland FFA for county fair.

¦ Had local veterinarian as guest speaker on livestock diseases; encouraged members to enter farm crops in local fairs; attended church in body; cut wood for one of the churches; invited a minister and his wife to annual ladies' night; wired and put lights in a home for elderly couple; built and repaired about a mile of highway signs; encouraged Ruritan members to fix, paint and put up mailboxes.

¦ Had superintendent of Clifton Forge schools as guest speaker for ladies' night; gave donations to Weekday Religious Education in Highland and Bath; bought materials for Ruritan Hall; remodeled kitchen; put wallboard on ceilings and walls; laid new floor; piped in water; installed sink; built cabinets; remodeled dining hall.

¦ Helped sponsor Highland County Fair; operated concession at Highland and Bath fairs; entered float in Highland fair parade; had representatives at all called district meetings and annual district conventions.

The club, which has 21 active members, raised $776 from its activities during the year and $300 from membership dues. It spent $265 for community activities; paid $229 to church groups and clubs for meals; $332 for building materials; $73.50 for district and national dues.

The membership has now started work on an additional parking lot and is purchasing materials for covering the outside of the hall.

Wimer, Harry Webb Jr., the Rev. Robert Gay, Clarence Bogan, Connell H. Conner Jr. and Russell "Wimpy" Rexrode.
