Highland Center to host reunion of 44 classes from Monterey High School
MONTEREY - The Highland Center will host the Monterey High School Reunion of classes 1922-1966, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 13-15. Generations of alumni, attendees and staff will gather at the old building for reminiscing and reconnecting during the weekend-long celebration.
The reunion is a response to requests by many alumni who would like to collectively remember their experiences at the school.
"Alumni have been asking for this reunion for years," says reunion committee co-chair and MHS almuna Louise Rexrode. "We're grateful that The Highland Center offered to host the event for us. The reunion spans 44 years, and we're planning for a large turnout. Mark your calendar and plan on attending this wonderful celebration."
The weekend will begin Friday afternoon with the dedication of the new farmers' market pavilion and the kickoff to The Highland Center's capital campaign. Many alumni, happy the old building is being preserved, renovated and put to new uses, plan to attend.
The reunion will continue Saturday with a lunch reception. Speakers include Emerson Johnson, an MHS graduate who has served in headmaster and interim head positions at schools across the United States since 1961; Harry Lunsford, a Highland native who is retiring as superintendent of Staunton City Schools; and John Reynolds, former principal of Highland Elementary School.
An ecumenical church service, led by 1940 MHS graduate Dr. Douglas Newman, will take place in the center's auditorium Sunday morning, followed by brunch.
Sunday afternoon, a concert by local musicians will bid farewell to visiting alums.
Several businesses have joined in sponsoring the event, including Blue Ridge Appraisal Co. in Staunton, First & Citizens Bank and Blue Grass Valley Bank.
Everyone who attended, graduated from, or worked at Monterey High School is welcome. Registration will close on Monday, July 2.
