Pool fund gets another $10,000
BY GEOFF COX • STAFF WRITER

Joe Gomer, president and owner of J.L. Gomer Equipment Co. in Richmond, recently donated $5,000 to the Highland swimming pool fund.
MONTEREY - Funding for the new Highland pool stands at $231,982 after another successful month of fundraising. Pool committee chair Maggie Cavell reported a $5,000 donation from Richmond construction equipment dealer Joe Gomer as the latest substantial donation. "I have been focusing on securing donations from non-residents with ties to the county," she said.

The pool committee has contacted a soil engineer for a soil analysis and hopes to have it done soon, with costs yet to be determined. Once the analysis is done, excavation work will proceed.

The commission has also contracted with engineering firm Mattern and Craig to prepare bid documents for the pool. "They just finished the pool in Covington," Cavell said.

Fund-raising continues and an architect is still being sought for designing the pool. Cavell said she hopes National Pools will be the firm that completes the construction.

With the plans for the pool moving ahead, the Highland Recreation Commission focused on the upcoming Mountain Mama Bike Challenge at Monday's meeting.

Challenge coordinator Kirk Billingsley said this year looks like the best yet, and he has received 116 registered participants to date. Businesses interested in sponsoring the challenge and volunteers willing to lend a hand are encouraged to contact Billingsley at 468-2827.

In other commission news:

• The softball tournament rained out in June has been rescheduled for July 21. New teams are invited to join. Contact Summer Cohen at 468-2946 to sign up.

• Swimming pool trips to Franklin, W.Va, are Mondays throughout the summer. The bus leaves the high school at 11 a.m.

• A trip to Blackfriar's Playhouse in Staunton is planned for the fall.

If interested in joining the Highland Recreation Commission, contact Cavell at 396-3534.

The next meeting is Monday, July 23.
