A race for everyone: Highland Hills 5K
Highland Hills 5K fields 35 runners, walkers

MONTEREY - The first Highland Hills 5K, sponsored by the Highland County Chamber of Commerce, had 35 runners and walkers complete the course. Participants ranged in age from 9 to 66 and came from as far away as Maryland and North Carolina to participate.

A small, but enthusiastic crowd gathered in the Word of Faith parking lot to cheer on their favorites and the chamber provided fruit and water to the thirsty athletes.

Bob and Miriam Helmen of Saddleback Farm said second place runner, Keith Salette Jr. of Centerville, was their grandson. Keith will run track next year at Virginia Tech. Sarah Bell waited patiently at the finish line for her husband, Norman, to finish. But she didn't have to wait long - he came in about the middle of the pack at No. 15 and only 10 minutes behind the front-runner.

Shane Wiseman of Monterey was the fastest Highland County runner at the Highland County 5K, finishing in 20 minutes and 44 seconds and coming in fourth overall.
