Bath School Board Bath County School Baord held its end of year close-out meeting Tuesday, June 26 and since Donna Smith was not able to attend the earlier June meeting, she was presented with a bell to commemorate her retirement after 31 years of service as secretary/ bookkeeper at VES. Superintendent Dave Smith told the board her first contract was for $2,725 a year. Following closed meetings, the board appointed teachers to BCHS: Sarah Redington, special education; Amber Yohe, biology/chemistry; Michelle Timbrook, vocational agriculture/science. Also appointed were three special education aides: Patricia Plecker, Julie Simmons, and Susan Keith. Resignations accepted were Daniel Madison, bus driver; and Rebecca LaFountain, special education aide, BCHS. The board authorized Smith to hire a school bus mechanic following interviews. The board authorized extending an unnamed employee into 2007- 08 to complete assigned tasks. The attendance report for June showed a total enrollment to date of 793 students - 343 at Bath County High School; 164 at Millboro Elementary School; and 286 at Valley Elementary School. Total attendance percentage was up from 93 percent in June 2006 to 96 percent this month. The budget for 2007-08 will be based on an enrollment of 750 students. Two-thirds of Bath students did not have any referrals for discipline issues during the school year. Faculty referred a total of 126 students for 417 incidents resulting in 262 total days of suspension.

Highland County

School Board Highland County Public Schools finished school year with $105,537 left over in its budget. The school board held its close-out meeting two weeks ago, and decided it will ask supervisors to carry over $7,718 in its cafeteria account (money in the budget that was not spent), reallocate $17,550 in flow through dollars to next year's budget, and transfer $80,267 to the facilities account maintained for the schools for capital needs. Total operating budget for 2006-07 was $3,986,077, not including debt service of $203,241. The board authorized a combined athletic/ recreation director position, as requested by superintendent Gary Blair. The next meeting is July 9 at 6 p.m. The board meets an hour earlier than its regular meeting to discuss with Blair areas in need of renovation and repair as part of an upcoming capital improvement plan. Blair gave the board a draft Code of Student Conduct. New in the draft are examples of alcohol, drug and drug paraphernalia; school permission for students to use prescription drugs at school; examples of arson; examples of weapons; examples of disorderly conduct; a reference to gang-related activity; examples of fighting; examples of integr ity violations; examples of sexual harassment and inappropriate sexual behavior; a paragraph on appropriate Internet use; transportation misbehavior; examples of vandalism; definitions of bodily injury, criminal street gang, DARE officers, and Web spaces; and a section of procedures in the disciplinary process. Blair submitted the draft for information this month, to be discussed at next month's meeting. The 2007-08 school year begins Monday, Aug. 20. Winter break is from Monday, Dec. 24 through Jan. 1, 2008. Spring break is from Friday, March 21 through Monday, March 24, 2008. The last day of school is Thursday, June 5, 2008 with graduation set for June 7.
