Millboro has new correspondent
BY GINA HAMILTON • CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Millboro resident Mary Vess couldn't believe her eyes when she went to collect her clothespin bag from the sheltered deck at the home she shares with her husband, Darrell. Here was a bird's nest right on top of the clothespins. It wasn't long before the mother bird (possibly a species of flycatcher) was flying in and out with bits of worms and spiders to feed her brood of four hatchlings. Three of the little ones have survived and appear to be thriving. It's just a matter of days before they take off on their own. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton)
MILLBORO - The Recorder is starting a news column focused on happenings in or near the town of Millboro in eastern Bath County, and I volunteered for the assignment.

Since moving from New Hampshire to Millboro last fall, I have found not only a new hometown but a community of the most caring, friendly people. They rallied around me when I was hit with a cancer diagnosis early this year and continue, along with my wonderful family and the Recorder staff (where I worked for a short time early in the year), to be my support base.

Now that I am doing better physically, I want to give something back and remain active in the journalism career I have enjoyed for 25 years.

During these past months in Millboro, I've heard about special events, top-dollar fund-raisers, notable achievements, and flooding in neighborhoods to the extent that residents have joked we need a zip line from house to house when three feet of water cascade down the road. One family has a bird nesting on top of the clothespin bag hanging on the side of the house.

In a small town, it's big news when VDOT brings in heavy equipment to clean out culverts to avert further flooding, a neighbor is recovering from debilitating cancer treatments, or fire department volunteers give even more of their time to building an addition at the facility.

In order to produce the Millboro Happenings column, we need your input.

So, what are we looking for? Your news. Tell us, in a short typed or clearly written version, about a special community event coming up, various achievements of residents, a play ahead at school or special field trip, a family reunion or birthday gathering to honor a grandparent, or when volunteers are needed to support non-profit group efforts. The information should be of interest to the Recorder's general readership, and we encourage photos to be submitted as well.

The information can be e-mailed to me at: hamiltonwriting@hotmail.com. Please put "Millboro news" in the subject line. Or drop typed or clearly written news off in a "Millboro News" envelope at Millboro General Store. Please include your phone number so I can call if I have any questions about your submission. The deadline is 5 p.m. each Friday.

I look forward to getting more news out about this special community and its residents.
