Christine Hodges, 4-H staff member, explains to a group of girls the metal chain they found probably belonged to an old fashioned toilet.
Mike Wilke (r) pours a bucket of dirt, while Gwen Miller (center) waits to shake the screen, a wooden box fitted with mesh hardware cloth used to sieve the dirt from artifacts. Wilke, a certified avocational archeological technician, is president of the Archeological Society of Virginia and the society's Highland chapter. In the background a group, led by Ashwood owner Dean Humphries, works to scrape more dirt into a bucket. The 19 children, ages 9 to 17, worked morning through afternoon, with 20 children listed for a second dig. The Ashwood archeological field day was made possible by a grant from the Homestead Preserve.
The Petrosky brothers enjoy watching their fellow volunteer wrestle the screen, as dirt, rocks, twigs and artifacts fly. Pictured (l-r) are: Brandon Plogger, Isaac Petrosky, Miguel Petrosky. (Recorder photos by Cynthia B Coleman)
