Photo Smoked rolled into the sky and traffic rolled to a stop following an electrical storm late Tuesday afternoon. Monterey, McDowell, Bolar and Blue Grass volunteer fire departments were called to a structure fire on Jackson River Road just north of Mustoe. Monterey fire chief Elmer Waybright said, "We went full force" to try and extinguish the flames. The house, owned by Hazel Corbett, had stood vacant for 30-40 years, and she said it stored antiques and family belongings. Phil Munchel, general manager of Highland Telephone Cooperative, was called to the scene because phone lines in front of the house had been damaged by the rising flames. Here, Greg Carter sprays water on the phone lines that were on fire. (Recorder photo by Brandi Bussard)
