Association announces plans for 56th county fair
MONTEREY - The Highland County Fair Association continues to meet monthly to plan the 2007 fair.
A goal of the fair is to provide a fun, educational forum, which allows activities, skills, arts, and crafts to be demonstrated and products exhibited. This includes livestock, small animals, horticulture, canning, baking, gardening, weaving, sewing, agriculture, hunter trophies, and more. Exhibits are important to the fair and it is hoped there will be lots of entries again this year.
The association will continue the nightly entertainment schedule as last year. The fair will kick-off with a grand parade on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. The Crestmen will perform a gospel show following the parade held at the grandstand.
Thursday night features the demolition derby as well as a dance performance in the gym by Sundance Studio.
The truck/tractor pull will start at 6 p.m. on Friday evening and the Little Switerland Cloggers will perform in the gym at 8 p.m. The horse show will be held from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Following the horse show, two music groups will perform at the grandstand starting at 7:30 p.m., The Hound Dog Hill Boys, a bluegrass band, and a southern rock band, the Hackens Boys.
There will also be the usual livestock shows, kiddie show, dog show, and archery contest throughout the fair. A bluegrass music show will be held Saturday starting at 1 p.m. in the gym by The Wright Kids, Hard Drive, and 220 South. The 4-H FFA Livestock Sale will be held on Saturday starting at 4 p.m.
Again this year, it was decided to keep exhibits in place until 9 p.m. Saturday. This will allow more time for visitors to view the exhibits. Prize money will not be awarded until 9 p.m. Saturday.
The fair guide will be printed as last year, which will look similar to our local newspaper. Due to cost of printing the former catalogs, this change was necessary and will allow for colored pictures, easy to read print, and it should be available to the public by Aug. 1.
Fair association officers include: Jerry Rexrode, president; Fred Frye, vice president; Kathy Beverage, secretary; Terry Rexrode, treasurer; and R.C. Pullin and Mike Isles, co-general managers.
In addition to the officers, membership consists of two representatives from each of the following organizations: Blue Grass Ruritan Club, Bolar Ruritan Club, Mill Gap Ruritan Club, Stonewall Ruritan Club, Monterey Lions Club, and the chamber of commerce.
Questions or ideas for the fair are welcomed; write to the Fair Association, P.O. Box 366, Monterey, Va. 24465.
