A motorcycle show and dance for youngsters in grades 3-8 will be held Saturday, July 14 at Lickety Splits restaurant on Route 42, just off the Route 39/42 intersection. The show will be held from 5-7 p.m., and the dance from 7-10 p.m., sponsored by the restaurant and the Badlanders motorcycle group and band from Covington. Prizes and trophies will be awarded. There is a small registration fee for this fundraiser. Proceeds will by used by the motorcycle group to help area people facing a serious illness. The event is also a summer social for the younger crowd. Members of the motorcycle club will serve as chaperones. For more details, call the restaurant at (540) 997-0555.
Their smiling faces said it all. Alumni of the former Millboro High School were happy to see each other last Saturday during their reunion held at the elementary school. The event was coordinated by Ann Higgins with members of the reunion committee, including Kay Taylor, who said more than 200 graduates had registered to attend. While most of their cars in the parking lot had Virginia plates, some had made the trip from Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The congenial group comprising Classes 1930 to 1970 shared hugs and smiles and catching up with events in their lives. They were also feted with a fine lunch. Watch for the full story and photos in next week's Recorder.
The Community Fitness Center at Calvary Baptist Church is going strong. The center is open Monday to Friday, 6-11 a.m. and 6-9 p.m., and Saturday from 8-noon, free, with equipment for youth and adult. Pastor John Green said the center has almost 140 members who come at varying times and is staffed with 20 to 30 volunteers from all area churches. Calvary Baptist Church is located on Crooked Spur Road, about a half mile off Route 42 near the Route 39/42 intersection.
A most inviting place on a hot summer day is the Millboro town pool behind the old school. According to the Bath County Parks and Recreation Department, pool hours Monday through Saturday are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from 1-6 p.m. Two lifeguards are on duty during the hours the pool is open. The lifeguards are provided by the YMCA in Covington. More information is available from Parks and Rec at (540) 839-7211.
If anyone has Internet service through Localnet Corp., you may have experienced a frustrating couple of days last Sunday and Monday. After crawling around under my desk and unplugging and re-plugging every possible connection Monday, I finally called tech support (1-888-488-7266) and found out the company was upgrading its equipment throughout Virginia and service was to be restored by Tuesday. However, they were able to give me a new phone number and I was able to get back online immediately. Now if they had published announcements about this upgrade, I wouldn't have had to clean the floor on my behind.
The Millboro Area Rescue Squad is taking registrations now for the next EMT Basic training course that will begin Saturday, July 21. The fee for residents is $1. Classes will continue twice a week until Dec. 12. Residents need to be certified in CPR to take the class. Call 550-886-3676 for more information or to register. In our rural area, the more trained emergency personnel the rescue squad has available, the shorter the response time will be when someone is in dire need of medical help.
