Douthat State Parks hosts 9th annual Arts and Crafts Fair
DOUTHAT - The Ninth Annual Douthat State Park Arts and Crafts Fair will be held on July 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Upper Beach Parking Area. Crafters from several different states will be on hand to display and sell their handcrafted items. Admission to the fair is free for everyone; however, visitors are required to purchase a parking pass at the Contact station or main park office. Visitors to the park may also enjoy on-going interpretive programs, over 40 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as the park's famed Lakeview Restaurant.
This year's fair will include ironwood work from a local blacksmith, house signs, crocheted items, candles, purses, paintings, acrylics, stained glass, folk art, wreaths, photography, centerpieces, and much more. This will be the perfect place to buy items to dress up your home, or get a jump start on gifts for any holiday. There will be something for everyone at the fair, including fun toys and games for children.
There is still time to register. All spaces will be filled on a first paid, first served basis. Any crafter interested in participating may register by calling Kirby Peters at the main park office at (540) 862-8100, or by completing a registration form and returning it to the park office, with the required fee, to Douthat Arts and Crafts Fair, 14239 Douthat State Park Rd., Millboro, Va. 24460.
The fair is a Douthat State Park Environmental Education Group event. This group is a citizen-support organization for Douthat State Park. The mission of the organization is "to operate on a notfor profit basis to provide assistance to the Virginia Division of State Parks for the continued operation and preservation of Douthat State Park through volunteer efforts, fundraising efforts, provision of materials and/or labor as may be required for activities and tasks which will enhance the educational and recreational opportunities available to all park users." Membership is open to any individual, family, club, business, or organization pledged to uphold the mission of the organization that pays the required annual dues. For more information, or to join, call the park main office at (540) 862-8100, or visit the website at www.douthatspeed.org.
Currently, one of the primary projects of Douthat State Park Environmental Education Group is support and fundraising for the future Douthat State Park Discovery Center. The Discovery Center will provide a central location within the park from which all environmental education and in- terpretive programming will stem. The plan is to renovate the old park horse barn into a nature discovery center. The center will contain the offices for the interpretive staff, restrooms, shower facilities, a wet lab storage area, an audiovisual center, a library, and a great room containing the displays and educational materials essential to the SOL-related environmental education that will be conducted in the facility.
