School board adopts discipline plan, appoints personnel
BY CHARLES GARRATT • STAFF WRITER

WARM SPRINGS - The Bath County school board has adopted a new division code of conduct to define unacceptable behavior and the actions that will be taken in response.

Dr. John Eller, a consultant from Virginia Tech hired by the school to help evaluate discipline issues within the schools, and design new conduct plans, made a presentation at a school board meeting last Wednesday.

Eller began working with the schools in August 2006, conducting workshops in all three schools. At the meeting, he reviewed results of surveys conducted over the year and summarized the actions taken at the classroom, school building, and division levels.

Board members questioned Eller on issues including leaving school grounds and public displays of affection before approving the new policies.

In other action, the board authorized the Bath County High School renovation committee to sign change orders. Superintendent Dr. David Smith explained delays in signing change orders could cost the system money while contractors waited for the board to act.

Board member Kay Hicklin said the subcommittee of Kaye May and Eddie Ryder had done a "marvelous job."

After a lengthy closed meeting, the board approved releasing Emily Muterspaugh from her contract.

Also the board approved Angie Keyser as an English teacher at BCHS. Nancy Bolton was appointed to a full-time cafeteria position at Valley Elementary School, replacing a worker who retired.

Two half-time positions were combined and Lois Cauley was appointed to fill both at VES.

A request by a parent to allow two students to enroll in the system part-time was denied. Smith said the students were either homeschooled or on a religious exemption and wanted to take part in some program in the public schools.

A meeting was set for July 31 at 5:30 p.m. in the school board office building.
