Library Notes By Tomi Herold, Librarian, Highland County Public Library
I am thrilled to report this year's summer reading program has been our best ever. Ninety-one kids have signed up to participate in the reading incentive program and 28 of them have completed their activity logs and claimed prizes already. We've had record attendance at our family programs and Thursday morning movies. We still have two more Thursday Morning Movies to go, July 26 and Aug. 2. The summer reading program ends on Saturday, Aug. 4 so all activity logs must be turned in for prizes by that day.
The library has added the weekly Pendleton Times to our newspaper collection. This is in addition to the Staunton News- Leader, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Harrisonburg Daily News- Record, and The Recorder. The daily newspapers arrive at the library with the mail around noon. Stop by the library then to catch the latest in print news.
The library offers an extensive collection of books on CD and cassette. Some library patrons have told me they like to take the opportunity to learn something while they're stuck in their car. To that end we've recently purchased a number of non-fiction books on CD. If history interests you, we have Simon Winchester's "A Crack in the Edge of the World, America and the Great California Earthquake of 1906," Douglas Brinkley's "The Boys of Point du Hoc, Ronald Reagan, D-Day, and the U. S. Army 2nd Ranger Battalion," and Harold Evans's "They Made America, Two Centuries of Innovators."
If self-help is your thing we have Dr. Phil's "Family First, Your Step-by-Step Plan for Creating a Phenomenal Family," Dr. Laura Schlessinger's "Bad Childhood, Good Life, How to Blossom and Thrive in Spite of an Unhappy Childhood," and Roizen and Oz's "You, the Owner's Manual, An Insider's Guide to the Body That Will Make You Healthier and Younger." For students of religion we have Karen Armstrong's "The Battle for God," and Bruce Feiler's "Abraham, a Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths."
We're starting to make plans for our annual used book sale in October and our book storage building is already filling with donated books. If you have books, CD's, DVD's or music you'd like to donate we're accepting donations now. Also, please be thinking about whether you might consider giving of your time to help with the sale this year. The scope of the sale has grown so large that hundreds and hundreds of volunteer man-hours are required. We really do need your help. If you can help us, please call or stop by the library to let us know.
As you bask in the warm glow of the sun, or hide from the sun in your cool air conditioned home, you can enjoy some new summer reads from the library. We have Nora Robert's "High Noon," James Patterson's "The Quickie," Janet Evanovich's "Lean Mean Thirteen," Danielle Steel's "Bungalow 2," Ridley Pearson's "Killer Weekend," James Rollins's "The Judas Stain," Jackie Collins's "Drop Dead Beautiful," and Robert B. Parker's "Spare Change." For science fiction fans we've recently fixed a glaring omission in our collection. We've purchased three Robert A. Heinlein classics, "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," "Stranger in a Strange Land," and "Starship Troopers." Check them out.
