Class member recaps Millboro High reunion
MILLBORO - Anne Hall Higgins, who graduated from Millboro High School in 1956, was coordinator and emcee for the reunion held Saturday, July 7, for classes 1930-70. The event was held at Millboro Elementary School.
According to Higgins, Millboro School was the "heartbeat of the community" for 54 years until it was closed in 1970 and students went to Bath County High School. Higgins said the event started as an all-high school graduates reunion in 2000. This made the fourth big reunion.
She compiled details of this event, which include the following report.
The program consisted of everyone singing the Alma Mater, led by Sonny Clark. Beatrice and Sonny Clark led a time of reflection in memory of those graduates who are deceased. Tim Tennant led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and also the invocation and blessing for the day.
Linda Tennant Weiss was responsible for the special music of the day, with Wayne Winebremer, pianist, playing "Golden Oldies" from 8:30-10 a.m. during registration. Weiss also provided a tribute to veterans by playing the service branch song, allowing those who were in each branch to stand on each stanza. Dale Laws sang a mixture of gospel and patriotic songs at 1 p.m.
A tribute honored the oldest male and female graduate. The oldest male was Herman Cauley, who graduated in 1930; he will celebrate his 97th birthday Sept. 11. The oldest female was Maple Heizer, who graduated in 1932; she celebrated her 95th birthday May 11. They have received this recognition every reunion since 2000, and look forward to the fellowship of old classmates and friends.
The youngest male graduate to attend was Leland Coursey, class of 1969; the youngest female graduate to attend was Sandra Wilfong, class of 1969. The male graduate who traveled the farthest was Charles Lowman Jr. of Lexington, S.C. The female who traveled the farthest was Janet Hodge Gray of Kaukauna, Wisc.
A total of 227 registered for the reunion, with 146 graduates, 79 guests, and two staff.
Franklin and Kay Taylor ended the program by drawing for door prizes, given by the following: The Recorder, Jean Plecker, Dinah Wood, Millboro General Store, Bluegrass Woods, Oak Ridge Station, Connie McLaughlin, Bungalow-Millboro, Mollie Clark, Lickety Splits.
Tender Heart Quilts donated a hand-quilted wall hanging of Millboro School, and much to her surprise, Ann Higgins' ticket was drawn for this item.
