Pictorial
In general, Highland County residents are used to getting where they need to pretty easily around town. In a county with only one major intersection where a blinking light is required, most folks can count on "commuting" to work without delay, or even seeing many other vehicles on the road along the way. Weekend traffic tends to pick up in the summer months from Friday night until Sunday afternoon as tourists on motorcycles and in cars enjoy the surroundings that we call home. Sometimes following an "out of towner" can be frustrating, especially if you find yourself behind a truck on the curves of U.S. 250, or as will be the case Saturday, behind a long line of bicyclists crawling over the mountains. This weekend more than 300 of them will be added to the mix, and cyclists' accidents have happened, including one death, in the past. Patience will be necessary for anyone on the roads. The Mountain Mama Road Bike Challenge is a terrific draw for these athletes, and the county benefits as a whole from the money raised during the event. This week's Recorder story on page 29 gives a general idea of when and where the bikers will be during the day. After they take off from Monterey, they will spread out and be passable. But drivers are urged to err on the side of caution, and give them the breathing room they need for this grueling ride. In general, the Challenge has proven to be a successful and safe event, for which its sponsors and volunteers can take credit. Enjoy the day, and watch the fun. (Recorder photo by Geoff Cox)
