Millboro Happenings By Gina Hamilton
The annual firemen's Carnival continues through Saturday, Aug. 4, from 7-11 p.m. each day, at the Millboro Industrial Park. Another family night is tonight, Aug. 2, with one price for all rides. Plan ahead now for the Ruritan club's chicken barbecue on Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m., and the parade at 5 p.m. In between, everyone can enjoy the games including bingo, rides, and other food booths. The event is a fund-raiser for the Millboro Volunteer Fire Association.
The Cowpasture River Preservation Association will host a summer picnic Saturday, Aug. 11, beginning at 1 p.m. with a float trip from the Walton Tract. Swimming and socializing, as well as picnic dinner, will follow. The reservation deadline is coming up quickly this Saturday, Aug. 4. For details, call (540) 862-9408 or e-mail kathy@centralridge.com.
Residents will have another opportunity to voice their opinions on what should happen to the old Millboro school buildings - tear them down or renovate them into apartments - at a public hearing scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m., at Millboro Elementary School. Bath County supervisors were disappointed in the low public turnout at the July 24 hearing, which included a presentation by representatives of Spectrum Design, the firm interested in converting the buildings into apartments.
Millboro Elementary School Principal Martha Reish has announced an open house will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 29, for parents of students from preschool to seventh grade. Preschool and kindergarten orientation will be held from 6:30-7 p.m. From 7-8 p.m., parents of students entering grades one through seven can meet their child's teacher, fill out forms, look at textbooks and ask questions. Reish said approximately 150 students are expected when school opens on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
