Free spay, neuter offered in Bath
HOT SPRINGS - Thanks to Hot Springs Pharmacy, Bath Animal Welfare Foundation volunteers held an "Adoption Day" at the pharmacy entrance Saturday.
Present and on display were a variety of healthy, active homeless dogs and puppies available for adoption. Although the purpose of the event was to bring these animals face to face with prospective new owners, it was also to make a statement about the serious problem of pet over-population in Bath County.
"There are not enough homes in the county to take care of so many unwanted pets and therefore a large percentage of these animals end up in the county shelter. Because the shelter has limited space and can only keep animals for a short time, many healthy companion animals are put to death," said Jean von Schilling, BAWF director. In addition, BAWF does not own a rescue facility. This fact, plus the situation at the shelter, reinforces the death penalty for so many animals.
The good news is that BAWF has received a grant from the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies to be used for spaying and neutering pets in Bath County. "This is a simple, painless, procedure performed by a veterinarian," reports director Joanne Wertz, "and it contributes to the good health of an animal as well as preventing unwanted litters." The grant has made it possible for BAWF to offer to spay and neuter all dogs and cats in the county at no cost during the month of August. Residents who wish to take advantage of this offer need to call the BAWF office at (540) 839- 8666 and leave a message.
