Highland County Board of Supervisors
In Brief . . .
The board of supervisors met Aug. 7 in the Highland County Modular Conference room. Supervisors Robin Sullenberger and Lee Blagg heard a report from John Wright of the Virginia Department of Forestry on the status of the gypsy moth, which he says may experience a resurgence in Highland County next year if conditions are right. The board directed county administrator Roberta Lambert to discuss it with a gypsy moth coordinator who might be able to assist the county next year. The cost of the program will likely fall on the affected landowners who wish to participate in a gypsy moth eradication program. Further cost-sharing by the state is contingent upon the county having a designated coordinator.

Monterey resident Lud Creef told the board, "I object to a few arrogant people riding up and down the streets with boom boxes." He asked the board to consider increasing sheriff's office patrols to curtail the noise. Creef attended a meeting of town council last week and asked for a town ordinance regulating noise.

Supervisors went into closed session with county attorney Melissa Dowd to discuss the school oil spill that occured several years ago, and possible action toward recouping money spent on the cleanup. A closed session was held the night before by the Highland County School board with supervisor Jerry Rexrode at superintendent Gary Blair's request.

The next meeting of the board of supervisors is 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4.
