Foundation elects officers

COVINGTON- The Alleghany Foundation has announced that Charles Kahle has been elected president of its board of directors at the 2007 annual meeting held July 28.

Other officers include James Dill, vice president; Patrick Winston Jr., secretary; and William Withrow, treasurer.

Dr. Michelle Ballou, James Eller, Harrison Fridley Jr., Jack Hammond, George Kostel, Dr. Wallace Nunley, James Snyder and Anne Wright serve as directors.

Kahle, owner of Owen's Pharmacy, Clifton Forge, will follow James Snyder, who will remain a board member after serving for 11 years as president. Kahle has served as a member of the board of directors since 1999.

"I look forward to serving with the board as we continue to improve our area through funding of grants to deserving organizations," says Kahle.

Under Snyder's direction, the foundation's assets have grown from an initial $35 million in 1995 to a current value of abou $68 million.

"During the foundation's history, more than $24 million in grants has been awarded to nonprofit organizations in this community," says Snyder.

"The past 11-year record of the Alleghany Foundation speaks volumes about Jim Snyder's leadership," says George Kostel, who along with Snyder, is one of two remaining original hospital directors who were chosen to lead the foundation which resulted from the sale of Alleghany Regional Hospital to Columbia HCA in 1995.

The foundation has awarded grants to more than 68 organizations under Snyder's tenure.

It has awarded $1.3 million to establish and support a school nursing program, provided funding for the construction of a new YMCA with grants totaling more than $3 million, and partially paid for the construction of the Alleghany Humane Society building with grants totaling more than $1 million.

The foundation also awarded initial dollars and continuing support to the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic and granted money for renovations to the public libraries in Covington and Clifton Forge, at a cost of more than $1 million.

"It is very satisfying to see these dollars at work and improving so many different aspects of service in the Highlands," says Snyder.

The Alleghany Foundation is a non-profit foundation based in Covington. It awards grants twice a year.

Non-profit, 501(c)3 tax-exempt organizations interested in requesting funding from the foundation should submit an application, following the instructions outlined in the foundation's application guidelines brochure.
