Virginia competes in nation 4-H forestry invitational

| WESTON, W.Va- Virginia was among 17 states that participated in the 28th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational Sunday, July 22 through Thursday, July 26.
The event was held at West Virginia University's Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston. The International Paper Company Foundation, Association of Natural Resources Extension Professionals and the Cooperative Extension Service sponsored the invitational.
Representing Virginia were Levi Clayton of Clintwood, Trey Mottley of Hot Springs and Rebecca Shaw of Vesuvius. The team was coached by Christine Hodges and Susan Wilder and they were assisted by Alan Webb.
Illinois won the event. Tennessee and Georgia placed second and third respectively. Chris Francis of Illinois received the high-point individual award. Second place was awarded to Neno Muganda of Illinois, and third place went to Miranda Hunt of Tennessee.
The Joe Yeager leadership award was given to Joshua Hippler of Louisiana. This award is presented to the individual who demonstrated excellent communication, management, decisionmaking and interpersonal skills.
4-H members compete for overall team and individual awards in several categories. Events included a forestry written exam, tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, the Forestry Bowl and forest evaluation.
