Monterey Garden Club visits local garden

MONTEREY - Even though it was a sweltering day, the Monterey Garden Club's annual picnic was enjoyed by all. Special thanks were extended to Carolyn and Bo Aldredge for preparing their lovely backyard for the event and to Cris Elliott for serving as co-hostess. Members brought a favorite dish to share.

The membership voted to hold a House and Garden Tour in 2008 and the tentative date is Saturday, July 12. It was decided to have a one day tour and to focus on homes and gardens in the Doe Hill and McDowell valley area. Lisa Munchel is forming a committee for the biennial event. She would like to talk with anyone interested in opening their home and/or garden for the tour and can be reached at (540) 468-3507.

Flower exhibit blue ribbons were awarded to Tessie Jordon, Elizabeth McCoy, Mary Hille McCoy and Barbara Richards for Horticulture and to Mary Hille McCoy and Barbara Richards for Artistic arrangements. Exhibit judges were Ann Preston and Louise Rexrode.

Six members participated in the yearbook cover design competition. The unique designs were admired by all and the vote was close. The winning cover was cre- ated by Barbara Richards.

Albert Beverage and his sister Lucinda invited those attending the picnic to tour their spectacular gardens. This was a special treat for everyone and Conley Colaw, who maintains the gardens, was the tour guide.

The club's next meeting will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 4, in the Mountain View Room of the Highland County Public Library. A program titled "Birds in the Garden" will be presented by Bob Jones of Birds-I-View. New members and guests are always welcome. If you are interested, please attend a meeting or contact a club member.
