Millboro Happenings
By Gina Hamilton

Parents can still apply to enter a child in preschool at Millboro Elementary School. Children who are or will be four years old by Sept. 30 will be given priority. Eligibility is also based on income level and/or identified need. If a child is accepted, the school must receive the following information before the first day of school (Sept. 4): the child's physical and dental examination documents; up-to-date immunization records; copies of birth certificate and Social Security card. Applications are available at Millboro Elementary School. More information is available from school-based preschool in Fishersville, (540) 245- 5162, extension 127, or 800-405- 8069.

An easy way to check on back-to-school events, activities, and sports schedules in Bath County is online: www.bath.k12.va.us and by clicking on the division calendar. School news items and student photos are also posted on this Web site.

The annual Back to School Beach Bash welcomes all ages of children to Douthat State Park this Saturday, Aug. 18, beginning at 11 a.m. A free lunch at noon will offer hot dogs. Various activities and games will take place, including the fun cardboard boat race. A small parking and swimming fee will be charged. For more details, call (540) 862-8100.

A wall of sunflowers blooms behind Millboro Elementary School in a flower and vegetable garden planted by fourthgrade students last school year under the direction of their teacher, Kim Manion. Funds for the project were obtained by grants from Virginia Naturally and the Virginia Hot Springs Preservation Trust. Principal Martha Reish said Manion plans to establish a colonial garden this fall with her students. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton)
Residents have another opportunity to voice their opinions on what should happen to the old Millboro School next Thursday, Aug. 23, when the Bath County Board of Supervisors holds a second public hearing on this issue. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Millboro Elementary School on Church Street. The board is seeking a majority opinion on whether to accept a proposal from Spectrum Design that would renovate the school buildings into apartments and offices, or to tear the buildings down. The old school is on the state's Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The school was closed in 1989.

Flag person Brittany Putnam of Millboro is ready to halt traffic on Lower Yard Road last Tuesday, Aug. 14, as a crew from the state's Department of Transportation prepared for more asphalt patching in various sections along the road. They had just finished paving the area past the Harmony Hill road intersection and were waiting for more asphalt to be delivered. According to equipment operator John Mills of Millboro Springs, the crew was based at the VDOT substation in Millboro Springs. They work on road patching jobs throughout Bath County at this time of year. (Recorder photo by Gina Hamilton)
Neighbors tell me we are really in the dog days of summer now. It's been so hot and dry that snakes are making an appearance, most likely looking for water. A copperhead was spotted a few days ago, and promptly killed, after coming across the railroad tracks behind the post office and heading for Cabin Creek. Despite the heat and lack of rain, some beautiful flowers continue to bloom around town.

Plan ahead for two events coming up in town. An open house will be held at Millboro Elementary School on Wednesday, Aug. 29, from 6:30-8 p.m., for parents of students from preschool to seventh grade. And on Saturday, Sept. 15, it's time again for the rousing annual Millbilly Bluegrass Concert, a fund-raiser for the fire department.
