Millboro residents Calvin and Zora Hefner (left) enjoy their Canna lilies now coming in bloom. These beauties take work to grow, as Calvin says. He takes the bulbs out in the fall to store over winter and replants them in the spring. He and his wife are avid gardeners and have planted these colorful flowers most years since 1985. According to Wikipedia online, the name Canna originates from the Celtic word for cane or reed. The plants are native to the southern United States and south to northern Argentina and can grow to 5-6 feet in height. Right: A Canna lily shows its spectacular beauty in the garden of Millboro residents Calvin and Zora Hefner this week. The flowers can be red, orange, yellow, or a combination of these colors. The plants grow from rhizomes underground. (Recorder photos by Gina Hamilton)
