Summer reading program sets record
Library Notes
By Tomi Herold

I'm pleased to say this year's summer reading program was indeed our most successful program ever. A record 93 children registered. Forty of those completed the program and received prizes, some of them as many as five times. We offered a total of 11 activity and movies programs and the average attendance was 21 people at each of those events. We were pleased with both the quality of the presenters and the enthusiasm of the participants in our programs this year. Highland County parents have a lot to be proud of.

The lucky winners of our prize drawing were Savannah Hevener, who won the Spy Gear collection, and Ivy Barker, who won the Twister Dance DVD game.

In other news the library reached its record high in monthly circulations in July. We leaped over the previously unsurpassed 3,000 mark to 3,105 items checked out for the month. The number of public access computer users was also at a record high - 474 people took advantage of our free Internet access in July. And that's just counting the ones who remember to sign in.

Our next program in the Local Author Series will feature local author Paul Klein, who recently published his novel, "Accidents of Time and Place." He will read excerpts and sign copies of his book at the library on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. He has graciously offered to donate the profits from the sale of his books at the event to the Highland County Public Library. Please come out and support a local author, and your library, too! Refreshments will be served.

I'd like to offer a reminder that the library's annual used book sale is around the corner and we're New on our shelves this collecting books right now. If you have books to donate for this year's sale you can bring them by from now until the beginning of October. We are desperately in need of volunteers to put this sale on, as it has grown considerably over the last few years. We especially need people with strong arms and backs, who can lift boxes of books without too much effort. Please let us know if you can help. After Labor Day we'll have the sign-up sheets for work shifts on the front desk at the library so you can choose a shift to help your community library. month you'll find Karin Slaughter's "Beyond Reach," Robin Cook's "Critical," Robert K. Tanenbaum's "Malice," Alexander McCall Smith's "The Careful Use of Compliments," Linda Howard's "Up Close and Dangerous," Jude Deveraux's "Someone to Love," J. A. Jance's "Justice Denied," Fern Michael's "The Marriage Game," Lisa See's "Peony in Love, and finally, a book which barely needs mentioning, but I'll do it anyway, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." Currently we have two copies and no waiting.
