Highland fair kicks off Wednesday, Aug. 29
 | | Highland's 56th annual county fair opens with a parade down Main Street featuring homemade floats, gussied up vehicles, and a variety of dancing and music groups who march from the corner of U.S. 250 and Spruce Street to the fairgrounds on the school campus. Bring the kids, catch some treats. |
| MONTEREY - The Highland County Fair Association is working hard to be ready for the fair to start on Wednesday, Aug. 29.Volunteers from the local Ruritan clubs, Lions club, chamber of commerce, and general community will clean out the barns, set up tables, prepare the elementary school gym for exhibits, and prepare the grounds for the 56th year this Saturday.
Several county youth workers and 4-H/FFA members helped to paint fence, barrels, and display boards along with some roof patching this summer. Anyone wishing to volunteer time with various activities throughout the fair is welcome.
Due to past concerns, the association plans to gate off the grandstand this year until two hours prior to the demolition derby and truck/ tractor pull, which will eliminate some reserved seating issues.
Due to a few lean years and the cost of running the fair, the association decided to increase the price of season tickets. Youth under school age are free. Season tickets are available at local businesses or at the entry gate.
Exhibits can be entered on the grounds from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Anyone, including non-county residents, can enter exhibits in the fair. Fair guides are available throughout the county with details on entries and schedules of events.
The parade will kick-off the fair on Wednesday at 6 p.m. West Virginia Amusements will provide the carnival rides and some games.
