Alleghany Highlands Children's Chorus offered for second year

COVINGTON - The Alleghany Highlands Children's Chorus will resume its program of choral singing and music education on Monday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Covington. This kick off rehearsal and orientation will last until 6 p.m.

New singers are invited and encouraged to join returning musicians who started the program last fall. Boys and girls ages 7-13 are eligible for the group.

Participants grow in musical skill and knowledge, interact with one another, and have opportunities to perform. The training includes voice production, music reading, rhythm and movement. A wide variety of musical material is used: sacred, secular, ancient, contemporary, folk and classical.

Parents of interested young people should call the church at 962-2195 to register and plan to attend the kick off on Aug. 27.

Although conceived and staffed by First Presbyterian Church, the program is non-sectarian.

Subsequent to the Aug. 27 opening session, the schedule each Monday beginning Sept. 10 includes a snack at 4:15 p.m. followed by chorus rehearsal 4:30- 5:45 p.m. An optional Bible Study and activity time is also offered from 5:45-6:20 p.m.

Sandra Minter, assisted by Patricia Howard, directs the chorus. Denise Pillow, assisted by the Rev. Jamie Pharr, leads the Bible study.

Children may be in the chorus whether or not they attend the Bible study.

First Presbyterian Church is located on the corner of Maple Avenue and Locust Street in Covington.
