WILLIAMSBURG - A pair of Hot Springs golf pros were among the winners at the Mid-Atlantic PGA Section Championship last week at the Golden Horseshoe.
Cascades golf pro Mark Fry shot rounds of 71-74-73- 218, 4-over-par, and finished 14th while Barry Ryder, director of The Homestead Golf School, shot 73-78-70-221, 7-over-par and tied for 26th place. Fry won $1,012 and Ryder collected $553.
Fry got a bonus when he won a three-way playoff that earned him a spot in next year's PGA National Club Pro Championship. "I won with a birdie on the first hole," Fry said of the playoff. "I hit it really well for three days, hitting 44 of 54 greens in regulation."
Barry also played well after the first day. His 70 on the last day enabled him to jump 32 people to finish tied for 26th.
The national tournament is in South Carolina next June.
SALEM - The two pros were also among the winners at the Kazim-Temple Pro-Am tournament at the Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem on Monday.
In the team competition, Fry teamed with his father, Basil, of Hot Springs, and his brother, Greg, and Bill Burton, both of Roanoke, to finish second in the two-best ball gross competition and won $110 each. In the pro division, Ryder shot a 70 to finish third and won $430.
STAUNTON - A pair of Hot Springs golfers were among the winners at the Rule Honda Golf Classic last weekend.
Chris Dressler and "Burnsville" Billy Keyser combined to shot 65-64-129, 15-under-par in the two-man captain's choice tournament at the par-72 Ingleside Golf Course and win the second flight.
