Wilson, Schmidt perform at The Highland Center
MONTEREY - Internationally renowned musicians from the Staunton Music Festival will make their Highland County debut at The Highland Center on Sept. 8. Music will be performed by two baroque music specialists; cellist James Wilson and harpsichordist Carsten Schmidt.
Wilson has recorded and toured extensively worldwide for the past 15 years, appearing in such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the City of London Festival, the Deutches Mozartfest in Bavaria, the Mostly Mozart Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. A resident of both Staunton and New York City, he regularly performs with many ensembles including the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, teaches cello and chamber music at Columbia University, and is currently the artistic director of the Richmond Festival of Music in Virginia.
Schmidt, who co-founded the Staunton Music Festival in 1997 and serves as its executive and artistic director, has performed extensively throughout Europe, Japan, and North America. He has appeared at the Ravinia Festival, International Schubert Festival in Amsterdam, the German Mozart Festival, Merkin Hall in New York City, Kennedy Center, and Kaleidoscope Festival in Moscow, and he has been heard in radio broadcasts worldwide. He holds artist diplomas from the Folkwang Institute,Germany and Indiana University, as well as a doctorate from Yale. Since 1998 he has been professor of music at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.
The Staunton Music Festival is now celebrating its 10th season. Festival activities take place at venues in historic downtown Staunton and feature more than 35singers, instrumentalists and composers.
