It's 84 degrees on a sunny Monday afternoon, and a crew from Rexrode's Masonry and Tile is building the veteran's memorial on the Highland County courthouse lawn. Pictured (l-r) are Jarod Heavner of Cherry Grove, W.Va., Sean Stanton of Monterey, and Larken Dean of Hillsborough, W.Va. Owner Jerry Rexrode said his company's involvement with the project is voluntary. Those wanting to donate or who want more information about the monument should call Richard Waybright at (540) 468-2140, Roberta Lambert at (540) 468-2347, or write to Highland County Veterans Memorial, P.O. Box 595, Monterey, Va. 24465. (Recorder photo by James Jacenich)

Jim Sponaugle hands out a beef sample at the Highland Farmers' Market Friday. Sponaugle and Rodney Leech of Virginia Cooperative Extension gave out recipes and prizes at the special beef market, which was part of ongoing marketing efforts by the Allegheny Highlands Agricultural Project. "We hope to one day have a facility where we can process and sell our meat locally," said Leech. For more information on the agriculture center project, call (540) 468-1922 or e-mail highlandcenter@htcnet.org. (Photo courtesy The Highland Center)
