Residents compete in national 4-H Invitational
The 4-H team placed ninth WESTON, W.Va - Virginia was among the 17 states that participated in the 28th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational July 22- 26.

The event was held at West Virginia University's Jackson's Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston. The International Paper Company Foundation, Association of Natural Resources Extension Professionals and the Cooperative Extension Service sponsored the invitational. overall; team members included: Trey Mottley of Hot Springs, Rebecca Shaw of Vesuvius and Levi Clayton of Clintwood. The team was coached by Bath/Highland 4-H agent Christine Hodges and Susan Wilder of Clintwood.

This is the second year Bath County has sent a senior 4-H member to this competition. Mottley has been in 4-H for two years and has attended forestry and 4-H camps, participated on the 2007 Envirothon Team, and plans to help with future forestry judging teams. He is working at Douthat State Park and attending Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.

4-H members competed for overall team and individual awards in several categories. Events included a forestry written exam, tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, the Forestry Bowl and forest evaluation.

4-H is a youth education program operated by Cooperative Extension Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the state land grant universities. More than 5.5 million young people participate in 4-H, and nearly 100,000 are part of the 4-H Forestry Program.
