Photo James Vaus, a Highland High School freshman from Monterey, spent three weeks this summer participating in a marine science course about oysters with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth in Baltimore, Md. To enter the program he had to achieve a qualifying score on the SAT. Half of the time in the program was spent sailing the Chesapeake Bay on the 100-year-old skipjack Sigsbee, with living classrooms. He learned firsthand how to sail, and about the efforts to save the oyster beds in the Chesapeake. The other half of the program was spent in the classroom at The College of Notre Dame of Maryland, where Vaus met other students from around the country. Johns Hopkins CTY provided a full scholarship, which enabled him to participate in this summer course. He enjoyed the program so much he hopes to participate again next summer.
