Millboro Happenings
By Gina Hamilton

¦ There will be a pork barbecue for the Millboro Rescue Squad on Saturday, Sept. 8, starting at 4 p.m. The menu includes barbecued pork, hash brown casserole, green beans, cole slaw, bread, dessert, and drink. The fund-raiser will take place at the rescue squad.

¦ Douthat State Park is holding "Saturdays in September," on Sept. 8 and Sept. 22, at the park's Discovery Center. There are three daytime events: "Turkey Kapers" at 11 a.m.; "Who Made These Tracks?" at 1 p.m.; "A Stroll in Nature" at 3 p.m. An evening event, "Twilight Canoe Tour," begins at 7 p.m., and requires preregistration and a ticket, as space is limited. The only other fee will be for casting animal tracks to take home. For more information call the park at (540) 862-8100 or em ail: douthatinterpreter@dcr.virginia.gov.

¦ Correction for the annual Millbilly Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, Sept. 15 - The band, Plain & Simple, was given the wrong description. Plain & Simple is not a two-man band, but has five local members - Danny Roberts and Denny Fitzgerald of Millboro, Billy Tolley of Goshen, Donnie Lawhorne of Craigsville, and Dave Conner of Natural Bridge. Singing lead vocals and harmony are Danny and Donnie, with Danny playing mandolin and Donnie, bass. Billy, Dave and Denney play, respectively, guitar, fiddle and banjo. They play traditional and gospel bluegrass for picnics, fundraisers, parties, festivals, churches, and more. The band has been together for more than two years and was put together by Donnie.
