Appalachian forest expo, Farm Bureau safety day scheduled

CLIFTON FORGE - The annual Appalachian Forest Expo and Farm Bureau Safety Day will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College campus, Clifton Forge, Va, I-64, exit 24.

Activities for all ages are planned, including equipment exhibitors ranging from loaders, por- table sawmills and outdoor woodstoves to hand tools and chain saws from businesses throughout the region.

A woodsmen competition begins at 9 a.m. with woodkids competition at 11 a.m., live music courtesy of the Corner Grocery Gang bluegrass band from 11 a.m. to noon and 1 to 1:30 p.m., and a quarter hunt at noon for children two to four years old. The Kountry Kickers will clog at 12:30 p.m. The Appalachian Logger Competition will start at 1 p.m.

The day will also provide an opportunity to help raise money for Log-A-Load for Kids Children's Miracle Network through a silent auction. The auction will include items suitable to everyone's taste, so come by and bid and help put a smile on a child's face. The silent auction will begin at 9 a.m. and end promptly at 2 p.m. Be sure to stop by the Log-A-Load for Kids tent and take a chance on a gun with a log truck engraved in the stock.

Near this tent will be vendors with craft items and even some Mary Kay beauty products for women. The Boy Scouts will be on hand selling popcorn. Puff's Pit-cooked BBQ will provide home-cooked food, cotton candy, and fresh popcorn. The Rockbridge High School FFA will have drinks for sale. Loggers can earn Sharp Logger Points for attending. There will be an ATV safety demonstration by the Farm Bureau. Horse and cart rides will be available throughout the day. Face painting will be offered all day and free coloring books will be given out to the first 200 children.

Various drawings and raffles will be held throughout the day. The Alleghany County farm bureau will draw for $100. There is no admission or parking fee. For more information about the show contact Dee-Dee Simpson or Carrmen Smith at (540) 965-8660, or deedeecherie@aol.com
