The Life Cycle of the Monarch Butterfly
The monarch butterfly is one of the most well-known and popular North American butterflies. The chrysalis stage, when the caterpillar changes into a butterfly, in the lower part of the photo last about two weeks. The volunteers who staff the visitor center at Gathright Dam are raising monarchs in the visitor center and releasing the adult butterflies. Visitors can purchase posters of the monarch life-cycle (upper part of image) and see all stages of the life-cycle at the center. Phone (540) 962-1138 for hours and directions.
