Highland Elementary School can receive money and supplies through the program. ¦ The board hired substitute teachers Caryn Brown and Christina McKay; Brian Parker, boys' varsity basketball coach; Sherry Sullenberger, girls' varsity basketball coach; Kim West, track coach; Mark Warf, boys' varsity baseball coach; Austin Shepherd, assistant boys' baseball; Margie Swanger, girls' softball coach; and Treva Hull, assistant girls' softball coach. ¦ The board approved a religious exemption from attendance at Highland County Public Schools for four students. ¦ Superintendent Gary Blair reported HCPS made average yearly progress this year as required by federal No Child Left Behind legislation. He said statewide 44 percent of school divisions and 72 percent of the schools made AYP. "It's complicated, but in a nutshell, we have to meet 100 percent proficiency in reading and math by 2013. It's difficult to get 100 percent of the people to do anything," said Blair. ¦ Enrollment is at 272 students, down by 15 students overall compared with last year. Blair said 24 students graduated in 2007, but only 16 students entered kindergarten. The elementary school is down an additional two students in other grades and the high school is down another five students.
