In Brief . . .
Monterey Town Council

¦ Town council met Thursday, Sept. 6 at the Highland County Public Library. Mayor Janice Warner reported the sewer treatment plant project probably would not go to bid until late October or early November, with work not beginning until spring. The engineering firm Mattern & Craig, hired to develop a plan and prepare a bid, has been delayed in completing its task due to difficulties obtaining prices for plant equipment (such as an aerator). Warner explained a limited number of sources carry the parts needed and three sources are required.

¦ A culvert retaining wall on the west end of Mill Alley has collapsed and is partially blocking the creek, creating an obstruction that could lead to high-water flooding. Council discussed alternatives to correcting the problem, including talking to the owner of the property where the wall collapsed, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Town attorney Melissa Dowd was directed to research possible corrective action with the Corps.
