Highland FFA gears up for busy year

FFA members are ready on their float to ride through the Highland County Fair Parade.
MONTEREY - The Highland FFA chapter has been working hard since school started, and the chapter has a new slate of officers. They include: President Sean Duff; vice president Michael Botkin, secretary Kate Obaugh, treasurer B.J. Lightner, reporter Jessie Siron, sentinel Chad Lightner, student advisor Sam Ellington, and historian Charles Trible. Additionally this year the chapter added two new offices, parliamentarian and chaplin, who are Kari Obaugh and Chance Massey. The officer team was installed last spring after a rigorous interview progress followed by nominations voted on by chapter members.

The officer team, as well as the chapter members, were busy working on two derby cars that completed at the Highland County Fair. One of the cars was driven by Steve Heavner, FFA advisor, who competed well but was defeated by his competitors. The other car was drove by Gary Blair, Highland County Schools Superintendent, who tied for second place in his heat.

The FFA Chapter sold chances to win a 250-pound hog at the fair which was donated by Penny and Travis Hiner of McDowell. The winner was Jeff Slate of Staunton. The FFA also put a decorated float in parade which took second place in its division. Further, the chapter sold milkshakes and sodas at the fair, which was a big help toward its goal of attending the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., and various competitions throughout the state.

All of these things would not be possible without the help of the community's continuous support of FFA through out the years. The FFA appreciates all the individuals and businesses who contributed their support during the fair.
