$88,000 raised during livestock sale at county fair
MONTEREY - The 2007 Highland County Fair Livestock Sale held Saturday, Sept. 1 grossed more than $88,000 in support of local 4-H and FFA youth livestock projects.
According to Bath/Highland County Extension Agent Rodney Leech, more than 80 businesses, organizations, and individuals participated in the sale. Other donations, amounting to approximately $6,300, will be distributed among show participants.
The champion market steer owned by Chad Lightner of Head Waters brought $2.15 per pound, and was purchased by B&S Construction of Staunton. Charlie Moyers' reserve champion steer brought $1.70 per pound and was purchased by Rudolph Evers of Bridgewater. The eight market steers averaged $1.48 per pound or roughly $1,900 per head.
First & Citizens Bank of Monterey purchased Kate Obaugh's champion feeder steer for $2.05 per pound. Roy Gutshall and Associates of Monterey had the high bid on Kari Obaugh's reserve champion feeder steer at $2.20 per pound. The 23 feeder steers brought an average of $1,230 per head which was an average of $1.91 per pound.
Robert Moyers of Doe Hill sold his champion market hog to First & Citizens Bank for $2.50 per pound. Charlie Moyers, showing the reserve champion market hog, earned $2.45 per pound from buyer Lucky Loop Hollow Farm in Mill Gap. The 17 market hogs exhibited averaged $2.08 per pound or $472 per head.
There were 89 markets lambs shown at this year's fair by 34 4-H and FFA members. Kari Obaugh's champion lamb was purchased by Rudolph Evers for $6.10 per pound. Cody Ralston's reserve champion lamb was bought jointly by Perry Huffer Plumbing and Mountain Hideaway Restaurant for $3.25 per pound. Market lambs averaged $412 per head which was an average of $3.70 per pound.
