Assault still under investigation
COVINGTON - According to Alleghany Sheriff Dale Muterspaugh, the assault case that allegedly occurred Sept. 12 is still under investigation. Many calls have been received, but at this time, no concrete information has been reported or found regarding the case or the composite sketch.
The sheriff's office last week issued a description of a man who allegedly followed a Bath County woman into the area, posed as an officer of some kind, and assaulted her.
"There is no change," Muterspaugh said, "no further leads, so we have to treat this as a credible report and case."
Muterspaugh cautioned drivers, especially women driving alone at night, to be careful if a vehicle with a flashing light pulls up behind them. "Any decent law enforcement officer," he said, "will understand a driver's hesitancy to stop in a dark lonely place."
He suggested a driver in that situation either put on his or her emergency flashers or turn signals, or wave a hand out the window to indicate they do intend to find a place to stop. "It is best," Muterspaugh said, "to find a lighted area with people before stopping."
Muterspaugh again asks citizens to contact the Alleghany Sheriff's Office with any information regarding the case or the composite sketch at (540) 965-1770.
