'Feed a crowd' training to be held

BOLAR - A "Feeding A Crowd" workshop will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Bolar Ruritan Club building. This workshop is sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension and the health department. If any non-profit, civic, church, or community organization feeds large groups of people on an occasional basis, this workshop is for them.

The workshop will cover information on preparing and storing safe food, cooking foods to safe temperatures, safely transporting food, keeping foods hot or cold during serving, reheating food, and health department regulations.

Each organization who has at least two members attending this training will receive a certificate of completion. This certificate, publicly posted in the group's food concession during the times of operation, will allow the organization to have seasonal status as a food vendor. As in the past, groups will still need to make application to the health department to participate in public food events. However, groups holding this status will not be subject to mandatory inspections from the health department. Groups successfully completing the "Feeding A Crowd" training will be allowed to begin serving foods without first receiving an inspection, and will be subject to spot inspections rather than mandatory ones. The certification period will be three years, at which time, a refresher course will be necessary.

For information, contact offices of Virginia Cooperative Extension - Bath: (540) 839-7261 and Highland: (540) 468-2225.
