¦ The new nature trail across the street from Millboro Elementary School will be dedicated on Saturday, Sept. 29, with a ribbon cutting set for 10 a.m. This project of the local Ruritan club began last spring. It now offers an educational trail for students at the school as well as anyone who wants to enjoy nature close up. The trail became a reality with financial support of individual donors and the Virginia Hot Springs Preservation Trust. A bridge serves as centerpiece of the trail, which will have signs posted with information on the area's trees and plant life. At Saturday's event, people can walk the trail of approximately half a mile. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.
¦ Saturday is also the first National Alpaca Farm Day and a local farm, Diamond Triple C Ranch, is participating in the event. The ranch located at 517 Deerfield Road will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to welcome visitors who would like to see the alpacas. Refreshments will be served.
¦ Douthat State Park will be a busy place as well on Saturday. Events begin at 11 a.m. in the Discovery Center with the program Turkey Kapers, which will introduce youth to the world of nature, and turkeys, in a creative way. At 1 p.m. participants can enjoy a stroll on a nature trail to see which wildflowers are in bloom and learn about the park's natural history. A fall foliage canoe tour will be offered at 3 p.m.; a small fee will be charged. Tickets will be available at the park office. A concert rounds out the day's activities at 7 p.m. with Skyla Spencer, the 2001 Golden Music Awards New Female Vocalist of the Year, performing country music. Admission will be charged. For more details, call the park at (540) 862-8100, e-mail douthatinterpreter@dcr.virginia.gov.
¦ For those who have missed Lickety Splits, the restaurant on the corner of Routes 39 and 42 in Millboro Springs, it will be reopened by Len and Trish Foutz on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
