Meals on Wheels has new delivery days

MONTEREY - "On Oct. 1, Meals on Wheels delivery days will change to Monday, Wednesday and Thursday," says Kate Wilke, director of senior services for Bath and Highland counties.

This change is to accommodate a new system of food preparation for all of Bath County and Highland County meals programs. Blue Roof Caterers will cook all the meals in the commercial kitchen of The Highland Center in Monterey.

The senior centers in both counties will also meet on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

"We have purchased menus and the recipes that go with them and the food supplies from Sysco Corp.," says Wilke. "These meals meet all the standards for proper nutrition for senior adults as specified by the Virginia Department of Aging. There are a great variety of meals offered and we are sure the recipients will enjoy them."

Recipients of meals are asked to keep in mind the following:

If the recipient will not be home when the meals are delivered, call (540) 839-MEAL before 4 p.m. the day before to be sure the meal is not prepared and then wasted. Meals on Wheels volunteers are not permitted to leave a meal if no one is home.

Bath County residents who receive bulk frozen meals should pick up the meals at Dr. Miller's parking lot at the foot of Warm Springs Mountain at 11 a.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month. If unable to pick up the meals at that time, call the Bath County Senior Center at (540) 839-5604.

Meals on Wheels recipients can also get pet food delivered, courtesy the Bath Animal Welfare Foundation and the Highland County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Call BAWF at (540) 839-8666 leave message with name and phone number or Karen Brower of the Highland SPCA at (540) 468-2764 for more information. BAWF will be sending out letters to Bath recipients informing them of this service.

Meals on Wheels is a service of Valley Program for Aging Services and the Volunteer Meals on Wheel organizations.

"We welcome any comments or questions about the meals," says Wilke. "Your generous donations are greatly appreciated."

She adds, "We also need more volunteers. Please give us a call."
