Need help with heating? Ask Highland Social Services

MONTEREY - The Highland County Department of Social Services will begin accepting applications for the energy assistance program on Oct. 9 and will continue accepting applications until Nov. 9. Applications can be obtained at the Highland DSS office located in the courthouse annex in Monterey. Office hours are Monday-Friday, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information on receiving help with heating and cooling bills, or equipment needs, call (540) 468-2199.

This program helps with home heating costs, but can also be used for furnace re-starts, late charges, delivery charges, installation charges, and connection or re-connection fees. Benefits are determined and authorizations for deliveries or service are sent to vendors in December.

Crisis assistance is intended to meet a household's emergency heating need, when no other resource is available. Local departments of social services accept crisis applications from Nov. 1 through March 15. The crisis assistance offered during this time period includes: one time only heat security deposit; portable space heater for temporary use, payment for emergency shelter, and/or heating equipment repair/ purchase. Local departments of social services accept applications from the first workday in January through March 15 for the following crisis types of assistance: purchase of home hearing fuel and payment of heat utility bill. Assistance is based on the availability of money.

Eligibility criteria for energy assistance include:

¦ Must be a resident of the locality in which application is made.

¦ Must have a heating or cooling expense responsibility.

¦ Monthly gross income may not exceed: one household member, $1,107; two household members, $1,484; three household members, $1,861; four household members, $2,238; five household members, $2,615; six household members, $2,992; seven household members, $3,369; eight household members $3,746; nine household members, $4,123; 10 household members, $4,500; 11 household members, $4,877; 12 household members, $5,254; 13 household members, $5,631; 14 household members, $6,008; 15 household members, $6,385; 16 household members, $6,762; 17 household members, $7,139; 18 household members, $7,516; 19 household members, $7,893; 20 household members, $8,270.
