School bus rear-ended BY CYNTHIA COLEMAN • STAFF WRITER
WARM SPRINGS - A Bath County Public Schools' bus was rear-ended by a truck Tuesday as it waited to turn into the high school campus from the southbound lane of U.S. 220. Eleven students were on board, and none were seriously injured.
According to state trooper Timmy May, bus No. 1, driving by Sherrie L. Morton, was hit by a 2006 Mitsubishi pick-up truck at 8 a.m.
In stop-and-go traffic in front of the high school, the truck, driven by a Bath County High School student, drove forward, not realizing the bus ahead had stopped. The truck ran into the back of the bus and received considerable damage; the bus received only minor damages.
Neither the student driver nor the bus driver were injured, and of the 11 students on the bus, only two complained of general pain. One had been sitting near the rear of the bus; the other was toward the middle.
According to superintendent David Smith, the two students were taken to a doctor's office at Bath Community Hospital. "It was at the request of their parents," Smith said.
The rescue squad was not called to transport the students; they were driven to the hospital by Jackie Baughn, a Bath County public nurse who visits the school on a regular basis.
After a brief examination, the two students returned to classes at the high school that day.
Damage to the pick-up truck included the front bumper, hood and grill and was estimated by May to be about $3,000. May said the damage to the bus was minimal, at the most $100, as it received only a bump and a few scratches.
The student driver had no other passengers and was wearing a seat belt. Charges against the driver were made for reckless driving.
