Second Saturday hosts pumpkin carving contest
MONTEREY - In May of this year, local business owners, headed by Tate Swecker, pulled together to form Second Saturdays, a gathering on the second Saturday of every month from May to October in the Mill Alley Courtyard.
This month the Second Saturday event falls on the weekend of the Hands and Harvest Festival. Keeping with the fall theme of the festival, Dorothy Stephenson, owner of The Sundance Studio and host for the October Second Saturdays event, will host a pumpkin carving contest in the Mill Alley Courtyard on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Entries will be taken that evening starting at 4 p.m. at The Sundance Studio. Bring your previously carved pumpkin to the Mill Alley Courtyard to be judged. You are asked that you do not carve your pumpkin at the Second Saturdays event, as the event does not want sharp knives on the grounds.
There will also be a decorated pumpkin contest in which you can bring your own pumpkin or pick out one in the courtyard to decorate and have judged. There will be art supplies available for decorating.
Judging will take place at 5:30 p.m. and the winner will be announced at 6 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to the best carved pumpkin and best decorated pumpkin.
For more information on the event, contact Stephenson at (540) 280-7975 or e-mail at clogger4life318@hotmail.com.
